You follow tankers because you want to know which aircraft can pass fuel, how they pass it, and who flies them. This guide walks you through propeller conversions, Cold War boom designs, and current multirole fleets, so you can tell a probe and drogue tanker from a boom tanker and read an operator list with confidence.
Aerial refueling is the transfer of fuel from one aircraft, the tanker, to another, the receiver, while both are in powered flight. It lets the receiver stay airborne longer and extend range or loiter time, and it lets a combat aircraft take off with weapons, cargo, or personnel and top up fuel after takeoff while holding maximum takeoff weight.
You gain time and reach when a tanker meets you in a close line astern formation. A series of contacts can keep range limited mainly by crew fatigue and by engineering factors such as engine oil consumption. Because receiver and tanker must hold tight formation, and because both need special equipment, the activity is used in military operations, with no regular civilian in flight refueling activity.
You also gain payload choice. An aircraft from a short runway can depart with a full combat load and less fuel, then connect after takeoff. Tankers built for this work can also move fuel between their own tanks with pumps and gravity drain to suit the mission, which matters when a receiver needs a specific fuel grade.
You need to picture two hardware paths. The flying boom is a rigid telescoping tube with movable surfaces, guided by a boom operator into a receptacle on the receiver. Once mated, toggles lock the nozzle and fuel flows, but only one receiver can use the boom at a time. The probe and drogue path uses a flexible hose trailed from a hose drum unit, stabilized by a basket that looks like a shuttlecock. Your probe is a rigid or retractable arm on the nose or fuselage, and valves open after mating to pass fuel. The system is simpler to adapt to existing aircraft, and drogue equipped tankers from many nations can serve probe equipped receivers built to the NATO standard with shear rivets. You can trace the early hose work on the Wikipedia list from the first successful mid air refueling in 1923 through looped hose trials and night boom images. Handley Page Type W aircraft appear with two airframes used for early trials by Flight Refuelling Limited, and three Handley Page Harrows appear as operators that refuelled Short Empire flying boats on transatlantic services, two from Gander in Newfoundland and one from Foynes in Ireland.
You also see Avro types converted by Flight Refuelling Limited, including Lancaster and Lancastrian tankers from 1948, with four Lancastrians split between Shannon in Ireland and Goose Bay and Gander in North America, plus Lincoln conversions. In the United States, the Douglas C-1 appears as a single engine biplane transport fitted with two 150 gallon tanks and a hose passed through a floor hatch, while the Consolidated B-24 Liberator appears in 1943 flight tests with a B-17E receiver. You meet the Boeing KB-29M from 1948 with 126 airframes, where the first aerial refueling units were created as the 43d Air Refueling Squadron at Davis-Monthan and the 509th at Walker. Earlier versions used a grappling hose system and later models used true probe and drogue, and one YKB-29T nicknamed Triple Nipple carried two more hoses on the wingtips. The KB-29P follows with more than 100 airframes as a boom tanker, and the KB-50 appears as an improved B-29 model in both drogue and boom forms.
You then move to the KC-97 Stratofreighter, based on the C-97 and through the B-50 to the B-29 line, flown by the United States and Israel. Its mixed gasoline and kerosene system was not desirable for jet receivers, and its slower cruise speed forced newer jets to slow toward stall speed to make contact. The answer was the jet tanker based on the Dash 80 airframe, the KC-135 Stratotanker, with 732 built, flown by the United States, Turkey, and Chile, where the boom can be fitted before flight with a drogue adapter.
You can read the French and Singapore KC-135 story as a fleet change. French C-135FR and KC-135R aircraft used probe and drogue and were replaced by the Airbus A330 MRTT Phenix, while Singapore KC-135 aircraft were replaced by A330 MRTT aircraft and sold to Meta Aerospace in the United States. The KC-10 Extender adds another option, with a flying boom plus a separate hose and drogue unit on the centerline at the tail for single use, plus underwing pods that can refuel two receivers at once and are called Wing Air Refueling Pods.
You see the same mix in newer Airbus fleets. The A310 MRTT appears from 2004 with two turbofan engines and probe and drogue for Canada and Germany, with six airframes including two Royal Canadian Air Force CC-150T Polaris aircraft, an operator record the Airbus A310 MRTT retirement story confirms. The United Kingdom A330 MRTT from 2011 is exclusively hose and drogue as Voyager KC2 with two underwing units and Voyager KC3 with two underwing units plus a centerline unit, with no self refuelling capability and 14 delivered as seven KC2, five KC3, and two fitted as KC3. The boom equipped A330 MRTT appears for Australia as KC-30, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Poland, Canada, Italy, and the Multinational Multi-Role Tanker Transport Fleet, with versions for Australia, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the multinational fleet carrying both boom and hose and drogue units, while Poland remained a planned acquirer in late August 2026, its final contract still to sign and four deliveries due by 2030, according to the Polish defence ministry.
You do not always need a large tanker. A buddy store is an external pod on a hardpoint that holds a hose and drogue unit, so a fighter or attack aircraft can tank another aircraft. That lets a carrier wing extend strike range, or lets an aircraft launch with a heavy weapon load and less fuel and then top up. The Royal Navy used this approach with Scimitar, Sea Vixen, and Buccaneer aircraft, in the Buccaneer case with a bomb bay tank and hose unit.
You can follow the United States Navy path from the KA-3B Skywarrior, a dedicated tanker variant and primary Navy tanker from Vietnam until retirement before Desert Storm, through the KA-6D Intruder tanker variant, where attack A-6 aircraft could also tank, to the KS-3B and then the F/A-18E and F Super Hornet as strike tankers after the S-3 left service. You also see French Super Etendard and Rafale aircraft listed for buddy to buddy work, plus United Kingdom Sea Vixen, United States A-4 Skyhawk and A-7 Corsair II, Soviet and Russian MiG-29K, Su-24M with UPAZ pod as strike tankers, Su-30MKI, Su-33, and Panavia Tornado entries.
You get more from the list when you read status and quantity together. The Ilyushin Il-78 Midas appears from 1984 for the Soviet Union, India, China, Pakistan, Algeria, Russia, and Ukraine with 53 airframes. The KC-130 Hercules appears from 1960 for Canada, the United States, and Italy with 180 airframes, while modified C-130H and C-130F variants appear for Canada and the United States Marine Corps. The Vickers VC10 appears with 27 airframes as C1K, K2, K3, and K4 for Royal Air Force squadrons including 10 Squadron, 101 Squadron, and 1312 Flight, retired on 20 September 2013.
You can use the same reading for British conversions and for current Asian fleets. The Handley Page Victor appears from 1965 with 30 B(K).1A, K.1, K.1A, and K.2 variants in No. 55 Squadron from Marham, with Victor tankers refuelling Vulcan bombers multiple times during Black Buck raids in the 1982 Falklands War and retirement in October 1993. The Avro Vulcan K.2 appears from 1982 with six interim conversions until VC10 tankers were ready, and the Lockheed TriStar appears from 1986 with two K1 and four KC1 aircraft in No. 216 Squadron from Brize Norton, retired on 24 March 2014. Chinese Xian HY-6 and Xian YU-20 aircraft appear for the Peoples Liberation Army Air Force, and the Boeing MQ-25 Stingray appears for the United States as an in development turbofan probe and drogue refueling drone.
